Elvis the Cat: Is Your Pet’s Health Insurance Right For Your Pet?

Most of us worry about our pet’s as much as we worry about ourselves, so it’s understandable that we as pet owners try to ensure our pets’ health and well-being by buying the best pet health insurance we can afford to take care of our pets. A good pet health insurance policy can be a huge help in being able to afford being able to care of our furry friends in comfort, but sometimes a good set of benefits isn’t enough even if you’ve already checked the deductibles, co-pays and exclusions. Not every pet health insurance policy is right for every pet, not even if it’s a “good” policy. Even if you have found an affordable pet health insurance policy with generous benefits for your furry loved one, here are a few more things to keep in mind as you shop for a pet health insurance policy:

Is the Pet Health Insurance Policy Right for the Age of Your Pet? Your pet’s health needs change as it ages, so make sure that any pet health insurance policy that you are considering can adapt to its needs as it goes through its stages of life, particularly age-specific treatments like teeth-cleaning.

Does the Pet Health Insurance Policy Take Care of Your Pet’s Breed? Some pet health insurance policies exclude conditions by breed, so read through any breed-specific exclusions carefully. For example, some pet insurance policies exclude hip problems in Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds. Expect to pay more if your animal is larger also.

Does the Pet Health Insurance Policy Take Care of the Preventive Care Your Pet Needs?Okay, this one is as much about your finances as your pet’s needs, but think carefully about your finances and what your pet needs. A high-deductible plan might be appealing if you’re mostly worried about a major accident or medical emergency for your pet, but remember preventive care can be more affordable in the long-term. For example, treating a pet for heartworm can cost $500 to $600, whereas six months of preventive treatment costs about $50 to $60.
