Medi-Wise Pharmacy in Newcomerstown is hosting a mammovan for free mammograms and free pap tests on Friday, April 13 and Friday, April 27 for women ages 40-64 who do not have insurance or are underinsured. Women who have health insurance including women with Medicare may also schedule to receive a mammogram and have their health insurance billed. Doctors advise women to have a yearly mammogram and pap tests starting at age 40 and earlier if they have a family history of breast cancer.
To quality for a free mammogram, women must be between ages 40-64. Women who are younger than 40 may still qualify for a free mammogram if they have a close relative who has been diagnosed with breast cancer or if they have symptoms of breast cancer. Uninsured and underinsured women are eligible for services through the program if they meet the income guidelines. Women over 65 are eligible for free mammograms through Medicare.
The American Cancer Society recommends that women receive an annual mammogram starting at age 40, obtain an annual clinical breast exam by a healthcare professional and perform monthly breast self-exams. Breast cancer is the disease many women fear the most, and early detection and treatment can dramatically improve a woman’s chances of survival. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, and leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women ages 40 to 55. If detected early – and mammography is the best way to do that – the five-year survival rate for patients is more than 90 percent.
